Main Characters and Their Development

• Richard Dudgeon - the main character, known as "the devil's disciple." Initially, he appears as a cynical and immoral person, rejecting the religious and moral norms of society. However, as the plot unfolds, he shows nobility and self-sacrifice when he decides to take the blame for a crime he did not commit to save another person.
• Judith Anderson - the wife of Pastor Anthony Anderson. At first, she sees Richard as a threat and despises him, but later, upon learning of his true motives and actions, she begins to respect and admire his courage.
• Anthony Anderson - a pastor and Judith's husband. He initially appears as a man completely devoted to his faith and duty. However, when faced with the injustice and cruelty of the British authorities, he decides to join the fight for independence, showing that his beliefs can change under the influence of circumstances.
• General Burgoyne - a British officer who, despite his role in suppressing the rebellion, shows a certain degree of humanity and understanding. He recognizes the absurdity and cruelty of war, making him a more complex and multifaceted character.
