• The Unknown Woman - the main character, whose letter forms the basis of the narrative. She tells of her unrequited love for the writer, which began in childhood and continued throughout her life. The Unknown Woman remains faithful to her love despite all the hardships and trials she endures. Her life is full of suffering and sacrifice, but she never loses hope and faith in her love.
• The Writer - the recipient of the unknown woman's letter. He is a successful and talented person, yet also superficial and self-centered. The writer fails to notice the unknown woman's sincere feelings and does not realize the role he plays in her life. Only at the end of the letter does he begin to understand the depth of her love and the tragedy of her fate.
