Main Characters and Their Development

• Jakob Bach – a German teacher living in the Volga region. He is reserved and lonely, but his life changes with the arrival of his daughter Ancha. Jakob learns to love and care, overcoming his fears and internal barriers.
• Ancha – Jakob Bach's daughter. She grows up in difficult conditions, but thanks to her father's love and care, she becomes a strong and independent individual.
• Klara – Ancha's mother, who dies in childbirth. Her presence remains significant for Jakob and Ancha throughout the book.
• Gustav – Jakob's friend, who helps him in difficult times and supports him in raising Ancha.
