Main Characters and Their Development

• Colin – the main character, a young and wealthy man who lives in a world full of fantasy and absurdity. At the beginning of the book, he enjoys life, but after meeting Chloe, his life changes. He falls in love with her and marries her, but soon Chloe becomes ill, and Colin spends all his money on her treatment. By the end of the book, he loses everything and dies in poverty.
• Chloe – Colin's beloved, a beautiful and gentle girl. At the beginning of the book, she is full of life and joy, but after marrying Colin, she falls ill with a rare disease—a water lily begins to grow in her lungs. Despite Colin's efforts, Chloe dies.
• Chick – Colin's best friend, a poor engineer and passionate admirer of the philosopher Jean-Sol Partre. He spends all his money collecting Partre's works, leading to his financial ruin. At the end of the book, he dies in an accident.
• Alise – Chloe's friend and Chick's beloved. She works in a library and tries to help Chick cope with his obsession with Partre. After Chick's death, she retreats to a monastery.
