Main Characters and Their Development

• José - the main character of the book, a modest and unassuming clerk in the registry of births, marriages, and deaths. His life changes when he begins searching for a woman whose name he accidentally finds in the documents. During his search, he encounters various obstacles and internal struggles, leading to his personal growth and a change in his perception of the world.
• The Nameless Woman - a mysterious figure whose name José finds in the archive. Although she never physically appears in the book, her presence and story significantly impact José's life, prompting him to search and reflect on the meaning of life and identity.
• The Archive Chief - a strict and pedantic supervisor who symbolizes the bureaucratic system and order. His interactions with José highlight the contrast between routine life and the pursuit of personal freedom.
• José's Neighbor - a woman who assists José in his search. She becomes his ally and support, showing that even in solitude, understanding and friendship can be found.
