Main Characters and Their Development

• Ernst Birkholz - the main character who returns from the front of World War I and tries to adapt to civilian life. He faces difficulties in finding work and restoring normal relationships with those around him. His inner world is full of contradictions and doubts, but he strives to find his place in the changed world.
• Albert Troske - a friend of Ernst who also returns from the war. He is more optimistic and tries to support his friends despite his own difficulties. Albert is determined to build a new life and believes in the possibility of recovery.
• Lucy - Ernst's beloved, who awaits his return. Their relationship is tested by the changes Ernst has undergone during the war. Lucy tries to understand and support him but also faces her own fears and doubts.
