Brief Overview
A young solicitor, Arthur Kipps, travels to a remote village to settle the affairs of a deceased client, Mrs. Alice Drablow. He discovers that the locals fear the old house where the deceased lived because of the ghost of a woman in black who appears there. Arthur begins to investigate the mystery of this ghost and learns that the woman in black is Jennet Humfrye, Mrs. Drablow's sister, who lost her son and died of grief. Jennet's ghost seeks revenge by causing the death of children who see her. Arthur himself witnesses her appearance, leading to tragic consequences for his own family.
