Main Characters and Their Development

• Johannes Verag - the main character, an artist living on his estate Rosshalde. He is going through a crisis in his personal and professional life, which is reflected in his art. Throughout the book, he undergoes internal changes, realizing the need for transformation in his life.
• Pierre - the son of Johannes and his wife Adele. Pierre serves as a link between his parents despite their estrangement. His illness and subsequent death become a catalyst for change in Johannes's life.
• Adele - Johannes's wife, with whom he is emotionally estranged. Their marriage has long lost its meaning, and they live as neighbors rather than spouses. Adele also undergoes internal changes, realizing the need to let Johannes go.
• Otto Burkhardt - a friend of Johannes who visits Rosshalde and helps him realize the necessity of change. He is an important character who supports Johannes in difficult times and helps him find a new path.
