Brief Overview

The novel «Beneath the Wheel» by Hermann Hesse tells the story of a gifted boy named Hans Giebenrath, who lives in a small German town. Hans shows exceptional academic abilities, which earn him a place at a prestigious seminary. However, the pressure from society and the educational system, which demands constant success, leads Hans to lose interest in life and studies. At the seminary, he meets Hermann Heilner, who becomes his friend and inspires him to think about freedom and the meaning of life. Gradually, Hans realizes that his true desires and aspirations do not align with the expectations of those around him. Eventually, he leaves the seminary and returns home, but finds no solace there. Under the weight of circumstances and internal conflicts, Hans becomes broken and ultimately drowns in a river. The novel raises questions about societal pressure on individuals, the search for one's own path, and the tragedy of losing one's individuality.
