Main Characters and Their Development

• Alexei Peshkov - the main character who goes through numerous hardships and trials to become a writer. At the beginning of the book, he is naive and full of hope, but gradually encounters the cruelty and injustice of life. His character is tempered, and he becomes more determined and purposeful.
• Varvara Vasilyevna - Alexei's grandmother, who has a great influence on him. She is a kind and wise woman who supports her grandson in difficult moments and teaches him resilience and patience.
• Kashirin - Alexei's grandfather, a strict and stern man. He often conflicts with his grandson, but ultimately his influence also contributes to the formation of Alexei's character.
• Grigory Ivanovich - Alexei's teacher, who helps him develop his abilities and thirst for knowledge. He becomes a role model and mentor for Alexei.
• Semyon Vasilyevich - Alexei's father, who dies at the beginning of the book. His death becomes one of the first severe trials for the main character.
