Summary

The play «Children of the Sun» by Maxim Gorky tells the story of a group of intellectuals living in early 20th century Russia. The main character, Pavel Protasov, is passionate about science and dreams of progress and a bright future. However, his idealism and detachment from real life lead to tragic consequences. Personal dramas unfold around him: his wife Elena suffers from a lack of attention, his sister Liza is in love with the family friend Boris, and the servant Anna endures a difficult fate. Against this backdrop, a cholera epidemic breaks out in the city, symbolizing the social and moral diseases of society. The play raises questions about the role of the intelligentsia, responsibility to society, and the inevitability of change.
