Main Characters and Their Development

• Sierva María — the main character, a young girl bitten by a rabid dog. She grows up neglected by her parents and surrounded by superstitions and fears. As the story unfolds, she becomes the subject of religious and scientific debates, as well as a romantic interest.
• Cayetano Delaura — the priest assigned to perform the exorcism on Sierva María. Initially approaching the task with religious zeal, he gradually falls in love with the girl, leading to an internal conflict between duty and emotion.
• Marquis de Casalduero — Sierva María's father, who feels guilty for neglecting his daughter. His attitude towards her changes as events unfold, but he remains trapped by his social and religious prejudices.
• Bernardo de Abren — a doctor who attempts to treat Sierva María from a scientific perspective. He represents a rational approach to the situation but faces resistance from the church and society.
• The Abbot — a church representative who sees Sierva María as a threat and seeks to perform an exorcism on her. His character embodies religious fanaticism and cruelty.
