Main Characters and Their Development

• Tessa Gray - the main heroine who comes to London to find her brother. She discovers she has the ability to transform into other people. Throughout the book, Tessa learns more about her origins and begins to embrace her power.
• Will Herondale - a demon hunter who saves Tessa. He hides his feelings and past but gradually opens up to Tessa and others.
• Jem Carstairs - Will's partner and best friend. He suffers from an incurable illness but remains kind and loyal. His friendship with Tessa and Will develops throughout the book.
• Jessamine Lovelace - a demon hunter who does not want to be part of this world. Throughout the book, she undergoes internal conflicts and changes.
• Charlotte Branwell - the head of the London Institute. She is a strong and determined woman who cares for her charges and fights for their safety.
• Henry Branwell - Charlotte's husband and an inventor. He is often absorbed in his experiments but also shows care and love for his wife and friends.
