Main Characters and Their Development

• Herman Broder — a man whose soul is torn by contradictions and the pain of the past. He is a Holocaust survivor, hiding from his memories and trying to find peace in post-war America. Herman balances between three women, each embodying different aspects of his life and inner world.
• Yadwiga — a simple Polish woman who saved Herman during the war. She symbolizes devotion and sacrifice, but her simplicity and straightforwardness conflict with Herman's inner turmoil.
• Masha — Herman's passionate and emotional mistress, whose turbulent nature and tragic past reflect his own fears and desires. She embodies passion and destruction, her love for Herman full of drama and despair.
• Tamara — Herman's first wife, who unexpectedly reappears in his life after the war. She is a ghost from the past, reminding him of a lost life and former hopes. Her return calls into question all of Herman's decisions and choices, forcing him to confront his own demons again.
