Main Characters and Their Development

• Zarité – the main heroine, a slave on a sugar cane plantation in Saint-Domingue. She endures many hardships, starting from childhood when she is separated from her mother. Zarité possesses a strong spirit and a longing for freedom, which help her survive and fight for a better future. Over the course of the book, she grows from a submissive slave into a confident woman who finds her freedom and love.
• Valmorain – the owner of the plantation where Zarité works. He is a complex character who balances cruelty with rare moments of humanity. His relationship with Zarité is complicated and contradictory, reflecting his inner struggle and development.
• Violette – Valmorain's wife, who at first appears superficial and selfish, but as the story unfolds, reveals herself to be a deeper and more compassionate character. Her relationship with Zarité evolves from hostility to understanding and support.
• Maurice – the son of Valmorain and Violette, who grows up alongside Zarité and becomes her friend and ally. His development is tied to his awareness of the injustice of slavery and his desire to change the world around him.
• Goran – a pirate and Zarité's lover, who helps her gain her freedom. His character symbolizes hope and the possibility of a new life.
