Brief Overview

The novel «Island Beneath the Sea» by Isabel Allende tells the life story of Zarité, a slave on a sugar plantation in Saint-Domingue at the end of the 18th century. Zarité, or simply Zaré, was born into slavery and has dreamed of freedom since childhood.
