Brief Overview

«Amok» is a story about a German doctor working in colonial India who faces a moral dilemma. One day, a wealthy Englishwoman approaches him, seeking help for an abortion. Driven by passion and a sense of duty, the doctor agrees, but the procedure goes awry, and the woman dies. Overcome with guilt and despair, the doctor decides to transport the woman's body by ship to Europe. Onboard, he recounts his story to a fellow passenger, and then, in a fit of madness, he throws himself into the sea with the woman's coffin. The story explores themes of passion, guilt, and self-destruction.
