Main Characters and Their Development

• Lillian Break: The main character and narrator. Lillian is a woman who was once a promising student, but her life went off track after a scandal. She receives an offer from her old friend Madison to help care for her children, who have the unusual ability to spontaneously combust. Lillian gradually finds her place in life by caring for the children and overcoming her internal conflicts.
• Madison Roberts: Lillian's former friend, now married to a senator. Madison is an ambitious and manipulative woman who uses Lillian to solve her problems. Her character is revealed through her relationships with Lillian and her children, showing her as someone willing to do anything to achieve her goals.
• Bessie and Roland: Madison's children, who have the ability to spontaneously combust. They become the focus of Lillian's care. Through their interactions with Lillian, they learn to control their abilities and find the support and understanding they lacked from their mother.
