Main Characters and Their Development

  • Santiago Salis — a young journalist whose inner struggle with disappointment and alienation becomes the novel’s leitmotif; his search for meaning and attempts to find his own identity reflect the tragedy of a generation that has lost faith in change. His father, Don Fermín Salis, a man crushed by compromise and fear, symbolizes the moral decline of the older generation, whose life is ruled by fear and conformity. Ambrosio — a former coachman, now a simple laborer, whose memories and stories reveal the tragedy of the common man caught in the whirlpool of political intrigue and human baseness; his fate is a chronicle of broken hopes and unfulfilled dreams. Zoila — a woman whose life unfolds in the shadow of male passions and ambitions, embodies the female lot in a world where power and violence determine destinies. Each of the characters, like a mosaic, forms a picture of a society where personal dramas are inseparable from historical catastrophes, and the inner turmoil of the heroes echoes the general crisis of faith and hope.
