Main Characters and Their Development

• Alexey Dmitrievich Nezhdanov - the main character, a young intellectual seeking his place in life and aspiring to revolutionary activity. His internal conflict and disillusionment with ideals lead to a tragic end.
• Marianna Sinetskaya - a young woman who shares Nezhdanov's revolutionary views. She is strong and independent but also experiences internal doubts and struggles.
• Valentin Mikhailovich Sipyagin - an influential landowner and politician for whom Nezhdanov works as a tutor. He embodies the old order and conservative views.
• Vera Vasilievna Sipyagina - Sipyagin's wife, a beautiful and intelligent woman who feels sympathy for Nezhdanov but remains loyal to her husband and his views.
• Markelov - Nezhdanov's friend, a committed revolutionary willing to go to extremes for his ideals. His fanaticism and intransigence contrast with Nezhdanov's doubts.
• Solomin - an engineer and friend of Nezhdanov, representing a more pragmatic and realistic approach to life and revolution. He supports Nezhdanov but also tries to guide him onto a more sensible path.
