Main Characters and Their Development

• Fyodor Ivanovich Lavretsky - a landowner and the main character. He returns to Russia after an unsuccessful marriage in Paris and tries to start a new life. He journeys from personal disappointment to finding inner peace.
• Liza Kalitina - a young woman who becomes the object of Lavretsky's affection. She is characterized by deep religiosity and moral purity. She gradually reveals herself to the reader as a person of high spiritual aspirations.
• Varvara Pavlovna Lavretskaya - Fyodor Lavretsky's wife, initially embodying mercantilism and selfishness. Her character evolves from being cunning and calculating to more complex and multifaceted.
