Main Characters and Their Development

• Masha – the main character, a young girl who at the beginning of the story lives in the countryside with her mother and sister. After her mother's death, she becomes the mistress of the house and begins to lead an independent life. As the plot develops, Masha undergoes internal changes related to love and marriage. She marries Sergey Mikhaylych but soon faces disappointment in family life and realizes that her notions of happiness were illusory.
• Sergey Mikhaylych – an adult man, a family friend of Masha, who becomes her husband. At the beginning of the story, he appears as a kind and caring person who helps Masha cope with the difficulties after her mother's death. However, after the wedding, his attitude towards Masha changes, and he becomes more distant and cold, leading to a crisis in their relationship.
