Main Characters and Their Development

• Danny - the main character who returns from the war and inherits two houses in Tortilla Flat. He becomes the unofficial leader of the group of friends and gradually realizes his responsibility for them.
• Pilon - a friend of Danny who lives in one of his houses. He is cunning and resourceful, often devising plans to obtain food or wine.
• Pablo - one of Danny's friends who lives with Pilon. He is good-natured and lazy but always ready to help his friends.
• Jesus Maria Corcoran - another friend of Danny, known for his kindness and generosity. He often helps those in need and cares for others.
• Big Joe Portagee - a friend of Danny, known for his appetite and love of wine. He often finds himself in comical situations due to his clumsiness.
• Torrelli - a local merchant who frequently tries to cheat the characters but ends up being outsmarted himself.
