Antigone

Main Characters and Their Development

• Antigone - the main heroine of the tragedy, daughter of Oedipus and Jocasta. She decides to bury her brother Polynices against King Creon's decree, demonstrating her commitment to family values and divine laws. Her actions lead to tragic consequences, but Antigone remains true to her beliefs until the end.
• Creon - the king of Thebes, Antigone's uncle. He issues a decree forbidding the burial of Polynices, considering him a traitor. Creon embodies state power and law, but his cruelty and stubbornness lead to the destruction of his family and the loss of his loved ones.
• Ismene - Antigone's sister, who initially refuses to help Antigone bury Polynices, fearing punishment. However, she later is willing to share her sister's fate, showing her love and loyalty to the family.
• Haemon - Creon's son and Antigone's fiancé. He tries to persuade his father to change his decision and save Antigone. When his attempts fail, Haemon takes his own life, unable to bear the loss of his beloved.
• Tiresias - the blind prophet who warns Creon of impending doom if he does not change his decision. His words prove prophetic, and Creon realizes his mistake too late.
• Eurydice - Creon's wife, who takes her own life after hearing of her son Haemon's death. Her death is the final blow to Creon, completely shattering his life.
