Main Characters and Their Development

• Marcus Vinicius: A Roman patrician, initially portrayed as a decadent aristocrat, falls in love with Lygia and undergoes a spiritual transformation under the influence of her faith.
• Lygia (Callina): A Christian woman, abducted from barbarian lands, becomes the object of Vinicius's love. Her faith, strength of spirit, and love play a key role in his transformation.
• Petronius: Vinicius's uncle, a refined aesthete and cynic, serves as a counterbalance to the ideological aspirations of the main characters, but is portrayed sympathetically as an intelligent and insightful man.
• Nero: The Emperor of Rome, living a life of excess in search of pleasure and recognition as an artist. His madness and tyranny become one of the causes of the persecution of Christians.
• Apostle Paul: A Christian preacher, appears in the novel as a secondary character, but his teachings and actions deeply influence the worldview of the main characters.
