Main Characters and Their Development

• Black Beauty — the main character and narrator of the book, a black stallion with a white star on his forehead. His life begins in happy circumstances, but he goes through many trials and hardships, changing many owners. Eventually, he finds a kind and caring owner, symbolizing hope and justice.
• John Manly — Black Beauty's first groom, a kind and caring man who treats horses well. He teaches Beauty to trust people and be obedient.
• Jerry Barker — a kind-hearted cab driver who becomes one of Black Beauty's last owners. He cares for the horse and tries to provide good living conditions despite his own difficulties.
• James Howard — a young groom who works alongside John Manly. He also shows care and attention to the horses, helping Beauty feel safe.
• Ginger — a chestnut mare, a friend of Black Beauty. She endures many hardships and cruel treatment from people, making her distrustful and aggressive. Her fate is tragic, and she dies from mistreatment.
• Sir Oliver — an elderly pony who lives on the farm with Black Beauty at the beginning of his life. He is kind and wise, sharing his knowledge and experience with Beauty.
• Merrylegs — a young pony who becomes a friend of Black Beauty. He is cheerful and energetic but also faces difficulties in life.
