Ruslan and Ludmila

Main Characters and Their Development

• Ruslan - a young warrior known for his strength and courage. At the beginning of the poem, he marries Ludmila but soon desperately sets out to find her, battling various enemies and overcoming hardships.
• Ludmila - the granddaughter of the Kiev prince, known for her beauty and kindness. At the start of the story, she marries Ruslan but is soon kidnapped by the sorcerer Chernomor. During her captivity, she shows patience and bravery.
• Chernomor - a sorcerer with a long black beard who kidnaps Ludmila. His magical abilities threaten many lives, but his power diminishes after Ruslan cuts off his beard.
• Farlaf - one of the suitors for Ludmila's hand, compliant and not particularly heroic. Instead of embarking on the quest himself, he tries to deceitfully claim her after Ruslan frees her.
• Ratmir - another suitor for Ludmila's hand, who also sets out on a quest to rescue her. However, he falls under the spell of another beauty and temporarily forgets his mission.
