Main Characters and Their Development
- Alphonse van Worden — the protagonist, a young officer of the Walloon Guard traveling through the Sierra Morena. His character evolves from a confident and brave young man to someone who begins to question his own beliefs and perception of the world.
- Emina and Zibelda — two mysterious Muslim sisters who seduce Alphonse and involve him in mystical and dangerous adventures. Their characters remain enigmatic throughout the book, symbolizing temptation and mystery.
- Pandesoa — a scholar and alchemist whom Alphonse meets along his journey. He represents wisdom and knowledge, but also the dangers associated with the pursuit of forbidden knowledge.
- Pater Pistol — a monk who accompanies Alphonse on his journey. He represents the religious aspect and often serves as the voice of reason and morality in contrast to the mystical and supernatural events occurring around them.
- Rebecca and Rebecca — two Jewish girls who also play an important role in Alphonse's adventures. They symbolize innocence and purity, but also the suffering associated with their heritage and religion.
