Summary

«The Cask of Amontillado» is a tale of revenge written by Edgar Allan Poe. The protagonist, Montresor, harbors a grudge against his acquaintance Fortunato and decides to exact his revenge. He lures Fortunato into his catacombs under the pretense of tasting a rare wine, Amontillado. Deep within the underground vaults, taking advantage of Fortunato's drunkenness and trust, Montresor chains him to a wall and entombs him alive, leaving him to die alone.
