Main Characters and Their Development

• Anna Fitzgerald - the youngest daughter in the family, conceived to be a donor for her older sister Kate. Throughout the book, Anna experiences an internal conflict, trying to balance her love for her sister with her desire for independence. Ultimately, she decides to sue her parents to gain the right to make decisions about her own body.
• Kate Fitzgerald - Anna's older sister, who suffers from leukemia. Kate undergoes numerous medical procedures and surgeries, and her life is constantly at risk. Her relationship with Anna is complex, as she feels guilty that her sister has to sacrifice herself for her survival.
• Sara Fitzgerald - the mother of Anna and Kate, who desperately tries to save her older daughter's life. Sara is willing to do anything for Kate and often overlooks how her actions affect Anna. During the legal proceedings, she begins to realize that her efforts to save one daughter might destroy the life of the other.
• Brian Fitzgerald - the father of Anna and Kate, who works as a firefighter. Brian supports Anna in her decision to sue, understanding that she also has a right to her own life. He often finds himself caught in the middle, trying to keep the family together and support both daughters.
• Jesse Fitzgerald - the older brother of Anna and Kate, who feels neglected due to his parents' constant attention to Kate. Jesse expresses his discontent through rebellious behavior and legal troubles, but deep down, he cares for his sisters.
• Campbell Alexander - Anna's lawyer, who takes on her case. Campbell has a complicated personal history and hides his own health issues. Through working with Anna, he begins to reevaluate his priorities and values.
