Main Characters and Their Development

• Omon Krivomazov - the main character who has dreamed of becoming a cosmonaut since childhood. His journey involves realizing the absurdity and cruelty of the Soviet system, which uses people as expendable resources. Omon undergoes training at a flight school, where he faces harsh realities and deception, yet continues to pursue his dream despite all challenges and disappointments.
• Mitka - Omon's friend who trains alongside him. Mitka also dreams of space, but his fate turns tragic. His character illustrates how the system breaks people, destroying their dreams and hopes.
• The Colonel - the head of the program in which Omon participates. He embodies the soulless bureaucratic machine that manipulates people to achieve its goals. The Colonel symbolizes authority that disregards human lives.
