Main Characters and Their Development

• Titus Groan: The main character of the book, heir to Gormenghast Castle. At the beginning of the book, he is just born, and his fate is closely tied to the ancient traditions and rituals of the castle. As Titus grows, he begins to realize his role and responsibility but also feels trapped by these traditions.
• Fuchsia Groan: Titus's sister, a lonely and dreamy girl. She feels neglected and undervalued by her family. Fuchsia longs for love and recognition, but her inner conflicts and emotional instability often lead to tragic consequences.
• Sepulchrave Groan: The 76th Earl of Gormenghast, father of Titus and Fuchsia. He is immersed in his duties and the rituals dictated by the castle. Sepulchrave gradually loses touch with reality and descends into madness.
• Gertrude Groan: Mother of Titus and Fuchsia, a cold and distant woman. She cares more for her cats and birds than for her children. Gertrude symbolizes indifference and detachment.
• Steerpike: An ambitious and cunning young man who seeks to climb the social ladder of the castle. He uses his cunning and manipulation to gain power. Steerpike becomes the main antagonist, and his thirst for power leads to destructive consequences for everyone around.
• Doctor Prunesquallor: The castle's extravagant and good-natured physician. He possesses a sharp mind and a sense of humor but also understands the absurdity and cruelty of the Gormenghast world. Doctor Prunesquallor often serves as the voice of reason and compassion.
• Irma Prunesquallor: Doctor Prunesquallor's sister, an old-fashioned and prim woman. She dreams of marriage and social recognition, but her attempts to find a husband are often comical and unsuccessful.
