Main Characters and Their Development

• Carl Streator — the main character, a journalist investigating cases of sudden infant death. He discovers that the cause of these deaths is an ancient African lullaby that kills those who hear it. Carl becomes obsessed with the idea of destroying all copies of this lullaby to prevent further deaths. In the process, he confronts his own demons and moral dilemmas.
• Helen Hoover Boyle — a realtor who also knows about the lullaby and uses it for her own purposes. She joins Carl in his mission, but their relationship is complex and ambiguous. Helen is a strong and manipulative woman who is not afraid to use people to achieve her goals.
• Mona Sabbat — a young witch and friend of Helen. She possesses magical abilities and assists Carl and Helen in their quest. Mona is an idealist who believes in magic and spiritual forces, but her naivety sometimes leads to dangerous consequences.
• Oyster — Mona's boyfriend, an anarchist and activist. He joins the group, but his methods and goals often conflict with the others. Oyster is a charismatic and radical character who seeks to dismantle the system and establish a new order.
