Main Characters and Their Development

• Harry Hole - the main character, a detective with the Oslo police. At the beginning of the book, he faces a mistake that leads to tragic consequences, and this event haunts him throughout the story. Harry is a complex character, struggling with personal demons such as alcoholism and guilt. During the investigation, he demonstrates his persistence and professionalism, gradually uncovering a complex web of crimes linked to the past.
• Ellen Gjelten - a colleague and close friend of Harry Hole. She supports Harry in his investigations and helps him cope with personal difficulties. Ellen is smart and dedicated to her work, but during the story, she faces danger that threatens her life.
• Rakel - a mysterious character connected to World War II events. Her story intertwines with modern events, and she plays a key role in uncovering the mystery related to the crimes Harry is investigating.
• Eivind Vold - the antagonist, whose actions and motives are gradually revealed as the plot unfolds. He is connected to both the past and present, and his character embodies the complexity of human nature and the consequences of choices made in the past.
