Main Characters and Their Development

• Harry Hole – the main character, a Norwegian detective who travels to Australia to investigate the murder of a young Norwegian woman. Harry is an experienced and perceptive investigator, but also struggles with personal demons such as alcoholism. During the investigation, he faces cultural differences and inner conflicts, which contribute to his personal growth and self-awareness.
• Andrew Kensington – an Australian detective and Harry's partner. He is a member of Australia's Indigenous community and plays a key role in the investigation. • Birgitta Endersen – the murder victim whose case Harry investigates. Although she is not a living character in the book, her personality and life are gradually revealed through the memories and testimonies of other characters. Birgitta was a young and lively woman whose death becomes the catalyst for many events in the story.
• Inger Holter – Harry's former girlfriend, who also becomes involved in the investigation.
