Main Characters and Their Development

• John Melmoth: The main character who made a deal with the devil to extend his life by 150 years. He is forced to wander the world, trying to find someone willing to accept his curse. Melmoth experiences deep moral anguish and despair, realizing that his bargain has led to eternal loneliness and suffering.
• Stanton: One of those who encounters Melmoth. He becomes obsessed with exposing Melmoth and his secret, which leads him to madness and confinement in a mental asylum.
• Moncada: A Spanish monk who also encounters Melmoth. His story involves escaping from a monastery and trying to evade the Inquisition. Moncada witnesses horrific events related to Melmoth, and his faith and moral principles are severely tested.
• Immalee/Isidora: A young woman who falls in love with Melmoth, unaware of his curse. Her love and innocence contrast with the darkness and despair surrounding Melmoth. Ultimately, she becomes a victim of his curse, highlighting the tragedy of her fate.
