Main Characters and Their Development
- Henry Esmond - the protagonist of the novel, the illegitimate son of Lord Castlewood. Raised in the Castlewood family, he gradually becomes their loyal friend and protector. His life is full of trials and moral dilemmas, yet he maintains his nobility and honor. Throughout the novel, Henry evolves from a young, naive boy to a mature, wise man who finds his place in the world.
- Lady Castlewood - the wife of Lord Castlewood and mother of two children. She becomes a second mother to Henry and has a significant influence on him. Lady Castlewood is a noble and virtuous woman who strives to keep the family together and maintain peace in the household.
- Beatrix Castlewood - the daughter of Lady and Lord Castlewood. She is beautiful and intelligent, but also proud and headstrong. At the beginning of the novel, she sees Henry as a brother, but over time their relationship becomes complicated. Beatrix goes through many trials and eventually finds her happiness.
- Francis Castlewood - the son of Lady and Lord Castlewood, heir to the title. He is friendly and kind but lacks outstanding abilities. His relationship with Henry is complex, but they ultimately become close friends.
- Lord Castlewood - the head of the family, who dies at the beginning of the novel. His death becomes a starting point for many events in Henry's life and the Castlewood family.
