Main Characters and Their Development

• Martin Dugan - the main character of the book, a private detective who travels through worlds via the Gates to investigate various cases. Throughout his journeys, he encounters different cultures and beings, which influence his worldview and personal development. Martin gradually realizes that his work is not only about solving crimes but also about understanding and accepting the diversity of worlds.
• Alice - a mysterious girl whom Martin meets in one of the worlds. She plays an important role in his life and investigations. Alice possesses unique abilities that aid Martin in his travels. Their relationship evolves from simple cooperation to a deeper understanding and trust.
• The Old Man - an enigmatic character who appears in different worlds and assists Martin in his travels. He has extensive knowledge about the Gates and the worlds they lead to. The Old Man becomes a mentor of sorts for Martin, helping him navigate complex situations and understand the true nature of the Gates.
