Main Characters and Their Development

• Elwin Ransom - the main character of the book, a professor of philology who accidentally ends up on the planet Malacandra (Mars). Throughout the book, he undergoes significant development, starting as a frightened and uncertain man and becoming a confident and decisive hero who understands and embraces alien cultures and their philosophy.
• Devine - one of the antagonists, a former college mate of Ransom, who seeks enrichment at the expense of Malacandra's resources. His character is revealed as selfish and ruthless, willing to do anything to achieve his goals.
• Weston - a scientist and the second antagonist, who, along with Devine, kidnaps Ransom. Weston is driven by the idea of colonizing other planets to save humanity, but his methods and disregard for other forms of life make him dangerous and ruthless.
• Oyarsa - the ruler of Malacandra, a representative of a higher race who possesses wisdom and kindness. He plays a key role in Ransom's understanding of the true nature of the universe and humanity's place in it.
• Hyoi - a member of the Hrossa race who becomes Ransom's friend on Malacandra. Hyoi helps Ransom understand the culture and language of the Hrossa, and his death becomes a significant moment in Ransom's development.
