Main Characters and Their Development

• Jan Andersson from Skrolycka - the main character, a simple farmer who is madly in love with his daughter Klara Fina Gulleborg. His love for her is so strong that after she leaves for Stockholm, he begins to believe she has become the Empress of Portugallia. This illusion helps him cope with loneliness and grief but gradually leads to his madness.
• Klara Fina Gulleborg - Jan's daughter, a beautiful and intelligent girl who leaves for Stockholm in search of a better life. Her departure is a turning point in Jan's life. Although she does not become an empress, her image remains elevated and idealized in her father's mind.
• Katrina - Jan's wife and Klara's mother, who stays in the village and tries to support the family. She is more realistic and pragmatic than Jan, and her role in the story is to be the link between Jan's reality and fantasies.
