Main Characters and Their Development

• Olesya — a young, beautiful girl living in a remote village with her grandmother. She possesses unusual abilities that the locals consider witchcraft. Olesya is a free-spirited and independent person who is not afraid to express her feelings and thoughts. Throughout the story, she falls in love with Ivan Timofeyevich, leading to tragic consequences due to the prejudices and superstitions of those around her.
• Ivan Timofeyevich — a young educated man who comes to the village on official business. He is fond of hunting and nature, which leads him to meet Olesya. Ivan Timofeyevich is a man with broad views, but his love for Olesya encounters rejection and hostility from the locals. His internal conflict between his feelings and societal norms becomes a central theme of his development in the book.
• Manuilikha — Olesya's grandmother, who raises her after the death of her parents. She also has a reputation as a witch among the locals.
