Brief Overview

The novella «Olesya» by Alexander Kuprin tells the story of the love between a young educated man, Ivan Timofeyevich, and a reclusive girl named Olesya, who lives in a remote village in Polesia. Ivan Timofeyevich arrives in the village for work and accidentally meets Olesya, who lives with her grandmother, Manuilikha, and is considered a witch by the locals. A deep affection develops between Ivan and Olesya, but their love faces rejection and prejudice from the village society. At the end of the novella, Olesya, sensing impending trouble, decides to leave the village to avoid tragic consequences for herself and Ivan.
