Brief Overview

The Unbearable Lightness of Being is a novel by Czech writer Milan Kundera, first published in 1984 in French. The plot revolves around four main characters: Tomas, a successful doctor and womanizer; his wife Tereza, who suffers from his infidelities; Sabina, a talented artist and Tomas's lover; and her friend Franz, an idealistic professor. Through their stories, Kundera explores themes of freedom and love, the lightness and weight of being, chance and fate, against the backdrop of the Czechoslovak socialist regime and the Prague Spring of 1968.
