Main Characters and Their Development
- Leo Gursky - an elderly Jewish immigrant from Poland living in New York. He survived the Holocaust and lost his first love, Alma. Leo wrote a book called «The History of Love», which was stolen and published under someone else's name. Throughout the book, he struggles with loneliness and memories of the past, trying to find meaning in his life.
- Alma Singer - a fourteen-year-old girl named after the heroine of «The History of Love». She tries to find a way to help her mother cope with loneliness after her father's death. Alma begins to investigate the origins of the book and in the process learns about Leo Gursky and his story.
- Zvi Litvinoff - a friend of Leo's from Poland who stole the manuscript of «The History of Love» and published it under his own name. He also survived the Holocaust and emigrated to Chile. His actions and their consequences play a key role in the development of the plot.
- Charlotte Singer - Alma's mother, a translator who is commissioned to translate «The History of Love». She struggles with depression after her husband's death and seeks solace in her work.
- Isaac Moritz - Leo Gursky's son, whose existence Leo was unaware of. Isaac becomes a successful writer and lives in New York, but dies before Leo learns of his existence.
