Main Characters and Their Development

• Frannie Goldsmith - a young woman who finds herself pregnant at the onset of the epidemic. She becomes a symbol of hope and the future, enduring many trials and finding the strength to keep fighting.
• Larry Underwood - a musician who starts as a selfish and irresponsible person. As the story progresses, he becomes more mature and responsible, finding his place in the new world.
• Nick Andros - a deaf-mute man who becomes one of the key members of the group of survivors. His kindness, intelligence, and leadership abilities make him an important character in the story.
• Mother Abagail - a 108-year-old woman who becomes the spiritual leader of the group of survivors. She guides them to a new beginning and helps them find faith and strength to fight evil.
• Randall Flagg - the main antagonist of the book, the embodiment of evil. He manipulates people and seeks power through fear and violence. His confrontation with the group of survivors is the central conflict of the book.
