Main Characters and Their Development

• Andy Dufresne - a bank manager convicted of murdering his wife and her lover. Despite his innocence, he spends nearly two decades in Shawshank Prison. Andy is a very intelligent and resourceful person, capable of finding a way out of any situation. Over time, he becomes an integral part of the prison library and financial system, earning respect from both inmates and guards. His unwavering belief in his innocence and dream of freedom inspire other inmates.
• Red Redding - an inmate serving a life sentence for murder. Red is the narrator of the story and Andy's best friend in prison. He is known as the man who can get things inside the prison. Over time, Red witnesses Andy's transformation and his incredible escape from prison, leading to changes in his own outlook on life and belief in hope.
