Brief Overview

«Dune» is a science fiction novel by Frank Herbert, the first in the Dune series. The story follows young Paul Atreides, heir to Duke Leto Atreides, whose family relocates to the desert planet Arrakis, the sole source of the universe's most valuable substance—melange, or «spice». Arrakis is a place of deadly dangers, including sandworms and constant intrigues among rival feudal houses. At the heart of the plot is the conflict between House Atreides and their arch-enemies, House Harkonnen. After the betrayal and death of Duke Leto, Paul and his mother, Lady Jessica, flee into the desert, seeking refuge among the native Fremen people. As Paul adapts to life in the desert, he begins to realize his unique destiny and supernatural abilities, which may help him lead the Fremen and restore justice on Arrakis.
