Main Characters and Their Development

• Foma Gordeyev — the main character of the novel, the son of a wealthy merchant. At the beginning of the book, he is portrayed as a young man full of energy and ambition, but gradually his character changes under the influence of his environment and life circumstances. Foma becomes more withdrawn and disillusioned with life, leading to his tragic end.
• Ignat Gordeyev — Foma's father, a wealthy and influential merchant. He serves as an example for his son, but his cruelty and lack of principles have a negative impact on Foma.
• Maya — Foma's beloved, who plays an important role in his life. She symbolizes for him the ideal of purity and beauty, but their relationship does not work out, adding tragedy to Foma's fate.
• Foma's mother — a woman who tries to support her son and soften the influence of his father on him. Her care and love for Foma are important elements of his life but cannot prevent his downfall.
• Yakov Mayakin — Foma's friend and mentor, who tries to guide him on the right path. However, his efforts are in vain, as Foma cannot overcome his internal contradictions.
