Main Characters and Their Development
- Khoma Brut - a seminary student initially portrayed as a carefree and cheerful young man. As the story progresses, he encounters paranormal phenomena, leading him to fear and terror. By the end of the tale, Khoma completely loses control of the situation, resulting in his tragic death.
- Pannochka - the daughter of a Cossack chieftain, who turns into a witch after her death. Her character evolves from a mysterious beautiful girl to a sinister and vengeful spirit that haunts Khoma.
- Viy - a mythical creature that appears at the end of the story. Viy has the power to make everyone look into his eyes, leading to the death of those who do. He embodies the culmination of fears and superstitions, representing absolute evil.
