Taras Bulba

Main Characters and Their Development

• Taras Bulba: an old Cossack, father of Andriy and Ostap. Stern but fair. Willing to do anything to protect his faith and homeland. Throughout the story, he emerges as an unwavering fighter, intolerant of betrayal.
• Ostap Bulba: Taras's elder son, a brave and uncomplaining Cossack. Fully shares his father's ideals and is loyal to Cossack traditions. During the events, he displays heroism but is captured and executed.
• Andriy Bulba: Taras's younger son, initially full of idealism and love for a Polish noblewoman. This feeling leads him to betrayal, for which he ultimately pays with his life, killed by his own father's hand.
